Back to school season is an exciting time of year, but it’s also common to feel nervous about starting something new! Choosing to start beauty school can be difficult, especially if you are someone who didn’t like school in the past. That doesn’t mean you can’t succeed in beauty school! In fact, many of the most successful cosmetologists and estheticians had a hard time during high school or at a traditional college.
Beauty school classes are small and involve hands-on practice and instruction. Your instructors will know your name and are committed to your success. You will find that beauty school is a much different experience than traditional school. Keep reading to learn more about how you can be successful in beauty school and beyond!
How You Can Be Successful in Beauty School
Before you start school, take a moment and plan out your goals for your time in school. Maybe you would like to master a certain technique, learn about interacting with guests, or simply make some friends and valuable industry connections. Write these goals down in your notebook and look at them throughout your time in school so you don’t forget about them! You can always add new goals too.
Give it Your All
The most important measure of success in beauty school is how much effort you put in! Jessica R., a former student, said that at first “I was passing but just barely, and I really wasn’t giving my all.” Once she started taking guests, she realized she needed to be putting in a lot more effort. She said “this is going to be my career, I have got to give it my all! I decided to give 110% instead. I wanted to go above and beyond!” After determining to give beauty school her all, Jessica’s grades went up and she passed her final with an A.
Your school experience is what you make of it. The more effort you put in, the more you will learn and the better stylist you’ll be!
Ask For Help
In the past you might have been in a high school or college class so large that the instructor didn’t even know your name. In those circumstances it can be difficult to ask questions. At Aveda, it is much different! You will be in small classes with instructors who are passionate about your success. While asking questions might have been intimidating in the past, it’s very important that you let your instructors know when you have a question. You will be better prepared for your career if you fill the gaps in your knowledge during school!
Remember Time Flies
While graduation might seem far away from the day you start your beauty program, the time will go by quickly! Compared to the years of your career that are ahead of you, your education is a very short amount of time. Make the most out of your time in school – you’ll miss it after you graduate!
